Charter Web Space Access - File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the simplest way to transfer web page files from your computer to the Charter web server for anyone to view.
FTP can be used with a commercial program that offers a graphical user interface (GUI) or with a simple command line interface (for example, from the Windows MS-DOS Prompt window or Macintosh Terminal window). Your Web browser can also make FTP requests to transfer files to and from your personal web space.
Some things to note when using FTP:

  • You will need to create your Charter personal web space user name and password. Please log into your My Account to create and manage your personal web space.
  • The maximum amount of personal web space that Charter offers per user is 20 MB.
  • You can access the personal web space at http://webpages.charter.net/username where “username” is the personal web space login.
  • Our web server supports files written in HTML code (JavaScript and VB Script is also allowed). If you want the web page to open automatically when someone visits the site, it must be named “index.html” and can be accessed at http://webpages.charter.net/username/index.html.
  • Some programs used to create web pages and server processing will not work with our web server. Those known programs are Microsoft FrontPage Extensions, PHP, ASP, Pearl Scripting, and CGI.

Personal Webspace

Create a Web Space Account

Every Charter Internet customer receives Web Space. To take advantage of your Web space, you will first need to create a Web space account via charter.com/myaccount, then build your Web site, and finally, upload your files via FTP to the Charter.net servers.

You may create a My Account at charter.com/my account, select the Online Tools tab. To add an account, click the Personal Web Space link and then select the package to which you would like to add an account.
To create your Web space, choose a username and password when prompted and then click Save.

This information will be used when uploading Web pages to your Web site, as well as in your Web site address (i.e. http://webpages.charter.net/username).

Note: that your password must be a minimum of 6 characters and is case sensitive.

Pick the HTML editing program

You can create your Web site in any HTML editing program. There are many basic editors that offer WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) designing tools that give you the option either of designing the page’s look and having the program write the code for you or of writing/editing the HTML code yourself.

Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer, CoffeeCup Free HTML, and Under Construction are examples of these types of programs. The more advanced may prefer editors such as HomeSite, HotDog Professional, Dreamweaver or HoTMetaL Pro. These and more are available for downloading at such sites as www.tucows.com.

For the Macintosh user, programs such as PageSpinner and CreativePage make it easy for the beginner or more advanced user. These programs can also be found at sites such as www.tucows.com.
