Charter WiFi Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Parental Controls Setup

Netgear WNDR3800 and 4300

Parental Controls are an excellent solution for keeping your family safe online. This article provides information to help you setup and manage the parental control feature of the Netgear WNDR3800/4300.
 
 

General

Router Login

  1. Launch a browser from a computer or wireless device that is connected to the router
  2. In the address bar type routerlogin.net or routerlogin.com and press Enter

The login window displays:

  1. Enter your user name and password. Note: The user name and password is case sensitive

The default user name is: admin
The default password is: password

  1. Click the OK button

You will be taken to the router’s Home Screen

Installing Parental Controls

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls

  1. A new browser page will open taking you to the address http://www.netgear.com/opendns

  1. To download the Netgear parental controls utility, click the button that corresponds to the operating system you are using.

  1. After downloading the appropriate file, Double-click on the Management Utility installer. Note: The installation file may need to be unzipped first

  1. Enter the username and password for your router and click OK

Please Note

  1. If you are already an OpenDNS user, the Management Utility can link your OpenDNS account to Live Parental Controls so you don't have to create a new account in the next step. If you are not already an OpenDNS user click the No, I need to create a free OpenDNS account radio button and click Next

  1. On the next screen enter the requested information to create a free OpenDNS account and click Next

  1. When your free OpenDNS account is created you will be prompted to choose a filtering level for your network. This is the default filtering level that is applied to all devices connected through the router at all times. Choose a filtering level and click Next.

Note: To override the default setting, such as on a parent's computer, a bypass account can be set up. Click here for instructions

Filtering Levels:

  • High – Protects against all adult related sites, illegal activity, social networking sites, video sharing sites, phishing attacks and general time-wasters
  • Moderate – Protects against all adult related sites, illegal activity and phishing attacks
  • Low – Protects against pornography and phishing attacks
  • Minimal – Protects only against phishing attacks
  • None – Nothing blocked

Setup is Complete. Click the Take me to the status screen to finish

Live Parental Controls/Remote Access

Live Parental Controls allow parents or network administrators to manage settings while away from home or office. This is particularly convenient when access "exceptions" need to be made. Since settings are stored on the web, you can manage your parental controls anywhere using a web browser.

  1. Using a web browser navigate to https://netgear.opendns.com 
  2. Login using your OpenDNS account credentials

Settings

Selecting a Time Zone

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls

Initially Setting the Time Zone

If this is the first time you are configuring advanced settings, you will be asked to select your time zone. It is important that you select the correct time zone for time-based filtering to work correctly.

Changing the Time Zone

  1. Click on the Account Settings link in the upper right

  1. Enter a City, State and Country and click the Show Time Zones button

Configuring Time-Based Settings

NETGEAR Live Parental Controls powered by OpenDNS allows you to filter specific Web content at only certain times of the day, such as applying more restrictive filtering during homework hours.

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls
  3. Click Add a Time Block to create a new time block

  1. Choose a time range that the time block will be active

Note: You can view and customize the filtering level to your preference by clicking the corresponding link in each category

Configuring Bypass Accounts

To enable the bypass accounts feature so that privileged users (such as parents) can log in to override the default setting, a User Utility needs to be installed on computers using the bypass account. Also, a bypass account needs to be created with the desired filtering (or lack thereof).

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls
  3. Click on the Add a bypass account link in the upper right

Download the User Utility

Each user who wants to bypass the default settings must be logged into this utility while browsing the Web. You may install this utility on multiple computers (Windows or Mac) and/or mobile NETGEAR Genie for iPhone/iPad and Android devices.

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls
  3. Click on the Add a bypass account link in the upper right

  1. Under Download the user utility, click on the link that corresponds to the device you are installing on (Windows computer, Mac computer or NETGEAR Genie for iPhone, iPad and Android devices)

  1. After downloading the appropriate file, Double-click on the User Utility installer

Note: For Apple iOS devices, download "NETGEAR genie" from App Store and use "Parental Controls" to log in with the bypass account.For Android devices, download "NETGEAR genie" from Google Play and use "Parental Controls" to log in with the bypass account.

Using the User Utility

The User Utility can be launched from Program\NETGEAR Live Parental Controls\Management Utility.

To log in to a Bypass Account, simply select the Bypass Account name and enter the password.

Note: The Bypass user is logged in until they explicitly log out. Custom settings specific to the user will be applied until the user logs out, even if the computer is restarted. That way if you have a computer that is only used by a parent, you don't have to log in every time you access the Internet. Once a bypass user logs out, the default setting is applied

Typo Exceptions

Users with local network names such as printers, shared directories, home servers, and NAS devices should add an exception for each device. VPN users should add the domain they VPN into as an exception. This will make sure your local network and VPN connection is unaffected by Live Parental Controls.

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls
  3. Click on the Account Settings link in the upper right

  2. Enter a name for the exception and click the Add this exception button

Your exception(s) will be listed under Your Typo Exceptions. To delete a Typo Exception, check the box next to your selection and click the Delete button.

Blacklist/Whitelist

If there are domains you want to make sure are always blocked (Blacklisted) or always allowed (Whitelisted) regardless of any filtering rules you've set, you can manage them using the Blacklist/Whitelist feature.

  1. Login to the Netgear WNDR3800/4300 Router. Click here for instructions
  2. Under Basic click Parental Controls
  3. Click on the Account Settings link in the upper right

Add a domain to a Blacklist

From the drop down box choose Always Block, enter the name of the domain you wish to be blocked and click the Add this domain button

The domain will appear under the Your Blacklist list. Any user, regardless of filtering settings will be denied access to these sites.

Any user trying to access a Blacklisted domain will receive a message stating that the domain is blocked on the network.

Add a domain to a Whitelist

From the drop down box choose Never Block, enter the name of the domain you wish to be allowed and click the Add this domain button

The domain will appear under your Whitelist list. Any user, regardless of filtering settings will be allowed access to these sites
