Securing your wireless network helps keep your computer safe as well as restricts unauthorized use which could possibly harm your computer or transmit illegal data through your Internet Service.
Below are instructions on how to enable wireless security on Charter’s Ambit/UBEE or Netgear routers. Please select from the links below to assist in configuring the security on your router.

Ambit/UBEE
Configuring Security Settings For The Gateway
Directly connect the Ethernet cable to the computer from the Ambit/UBEE Charter Wireless Home Networking Gateway. Then open the web browser window to test for an internet connection. If no internet connection exists, check cable connections and power cycle the Ambit/UBEE Wireless Home Networking Router. Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the web browser and hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

Log in using the username and password as provided. If you do not have this information, please contact Charter Support at 1-888-GET-CHARTER (888-438-2427).
Click OK.

Click on WIRELESS (along the top, underneath the Ambit/UBEE logo).Next click Basic.

Change Network Name (SSID) to a name that is recognizable. The example below displays "CharterSub". This can be named anything.
Select Wireless Channel 1, 6 or 11
Click Apply.

Click Security.
Enter Passphrase for Keys (Example:charterxxxx) This field is case sensitive. Click Generate WEP Keys.
Click Apply.

For Setting up WPA for Ambit/UBEE routers, Click Security
Then, Enable WPA-PSK. (A Pull Down Menu)
If the WPA-PSK option is shown as gray, first disable the WEP Encryption.
Enter the Password in the WPA Pre-Shared Key field (Example: charterxxxx). This field is case sensitive.
Click Apply.

Netgear
Configuring Security Settings For The Gateway
Directly connect the Ethernet wire to the computer from the Netgear Wireless Home Networking Router. Then open the web browser window to test for an internet connection. If no internet connection exists, check cable connections and power cycle the Netgear Wireless Home Networking Router. Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the web browser and hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

Log in using the username and password as provided. If you do not have this information, please contact Charter Support at 1-888-GET-CHARTER (888-438-2427).
Click OK

Next, click on Wireless Settings on the left side.
Change Network Name (SSID) to a name that is recognizable. The example below displays "CharterSub". This can be named anything.
Select Wireless Channel 1, 6 or 11

Enter WEP Passphrase for Keys (Example:chtrxxxx) This field is case sensitive. Click Generate. Then click Apply.

For Netgear routers, select the WPA-PSK Encryption to configure WPA security.

Type a customer defined passphrase (password) and click Apply to save changes.

Configuring Security Settings For The Gateway
- Directly connect an Ethernet cable to the gateway.
- Open the web browser on your PC.
- In the address bar of your browser, type http://192.168.0.1 and then select Go.

- You will see a screen that looks like this, prompting you to log in to the router.

The default User name is: chtruser
The default Password is: charter
If you have changed the User name and/or Password from the default, and cannot remember it, please contact Customer Service.
- At the main screen, click on Setup.

- Click on Security under the Wireless heading to configure the security settings for your network.

Configuring Security Settings For The Gateway
- Directly connect an Ethernet cable to the gateway.
- Open the web browser on your PC.
- In the address bar of your browser, type http://192.168.0.1 and then select Go

- You will see a screen that looks like this, prompting you to log in to the router.

The default User name is: admin
The default Password is: motorola
If you have changed the User name and/or Password from the default, and cannot remember it, please contact Customer Service.
- Successful login will then take you to the Status page.

- Click on Wireless in the top menu bar.

- In the menu on the left side, click on Primary Network.

- From this screen, you will be able to configure the security settings for your network.

Configuring Security Settings For The Gateway

- You will see a screen that looks like this, prompting you to log in to the router.

The default User name is: cusadmin
The default Password is: password
If you have changed the User name and/or Password from the default, and cannot remember it, please contact Customer Service.
- Successful login will then take you to the Gateway Setup page.

- Click on Wireless in the menu bar on the left side.
- In Wireless Basic Settings, you can configure settings such as the Network Name (SSID), Mode, and Channel. . .

Or you can configure the type of security and network keys under "Encryption".
