Charter Communications provides support for the connectivity between a cable modem and a personal computer. Charter Communications also provides support for the Charter Security Suite and our Home Networking product.
In order to provide you with further support we have created the following Home Networking self-help information.
Download Software
SMC Adapter installation software can be downloaded from the following link:
http://www.smc.com/files/AE/DRV_SMCWUSB-G_v1.0.0.9_(Vista_included).zip
Upon accessing the link, the user should save the file to the Desktop for easy access.
Extract Software
The saved file will appear on the Desktop.
Right click the file and select Extract All
The Extraction Wizard will open. Select Next to Continue.
Select a Destination
Do not rename the default file name. Click Next to continue.

Extraction Complete
Click the check box to Show Extracted Files. Click Finish to continue.

Locate Setup File
Once the files have been extracted, the user can return to the Desktop to locate the same file.
Open the Folder.
Locate and open the Setup file.
Installation Wizard
The Installation Wizard will open and begin to prepare for installation.

The Destination folder can be selected to the user’s choice, or remain as the default option. Click Next to continue.

Setup Status
Allow the installation to complete.

Attach the USB Adapter
The Setup will ask the user to connect the SMC USB Adapter. Once connected, an information message may appear in the system try to notify the user of the attached device.
Click the information message to continue
Setup Complete
The Setup window will appear once again, and allow the user to click Finish

SMC EZ Connect
The SMC EZ Connect software will allow the user to manage easily their wireless home network.
When closed, the program will dock in the system tray and remain available upon double-clicking the icon.

Profile Setup

To setup the profile, which will save the settings, locate and click the New button.
Create a profile name; using the network name is preferred.
Click OK to save the profile name.
Network Name

Drop down the Network Name field (ssid) and select the appropriate network name to connect.
Network Security

Click the Security Tab
From this tab, the network security type can be enabled and setup.
Click on the security: on/off button.
Then choose type of encryption, WEP, or WPA, and passphrase.
Encryption Settings
WPA (WiFi Protected Access)
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA encryption is stronger than previous versions, such as WEP, and it allows the customer to create an easier to remember password that is not restricted to (0-9) and (A-F).
You must click
to save the security settings and save the network setup.
Network Information

Upon completion of the network setup, the user will have a detailed view of their network setup.
Available information includes:
- Network Name
- Signal Strength
- Link Quality
