Charter TV App


The Charter TV App gives you more choices for watching your favorite programming at no extra charge. Watch live TV and On Demand programming, browse 14 days of guide listings, schedule recordings, get programming recommendations and more.

Note: The app is currently unavailable in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming, but we're working hard to make it available soon.

General Information


  • Watch Live Channels on your mobile device anywhere at home (connected to your Charter WiFi network).
  • Watch live Showtime channels anywhere with a WiFi connection (Showtime subscription required).
  • Watch select On Demand movies and TV shows anywhere you're connected to a cellular or WiFi network.
  • Browse On Demand programming and play it on your TV.
  • Schedule DVR recordings (Motorola digital receiver required).
  • Set reminders for upcoming movies and TV shows (Cisco digital receiver required).
  • Browse the Guide and search for programming.

There is no additional charge for the App.

All Kindle Fire models, including the new Kindle Fire HDX, are supported except for the first-generation Kindle Fire.

Note: Go to Settings > Device > About and confirm your System Version does NOT start with 6.  If it starts with 6, you have the first-generation Kindle Fire.

Googe Play Store

Android Devices:

All tablets and phones running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above are supported.

Minimum Charter Service Requirements

Charter Spectrum TV-only Subscription:

Basic access is available to any customer who subscribes to Charter Basic TV.

With a Select, Silver or Gold Charter Spectrum TV subscription, you can:

  • Watch live and On Demand TV everywhere from Showtime, Starz, Encore and MoviePlex (if included in your subscription).
  • Download thousands of movies and TV shows and watch them on the go with your subscription to Showtime, Starz, Encore or MoviePlex.
  • Interact with the guide.
  • Search for upcoming scheduled programs.
  • Add to your Watchlist.
  • View kid-friendly programming in Kid Zone.
  • Check the latest scores in Sport Zone.
  • Browse On Demand programming.

Charter Spectrum TV and Internet Subscription:

With TV and Internet Service from Charter, you can do all of the above, plus:

  • Stream live TV.
  • Set recordings or reminders.
  • Use your device as a remote to change channels.
  • To access tuning and DVR functions, a compatible Charter digital receiver is required.
  • A compatible Charter digital receiver is required to access tuning and DVR functions.
  • Motorola digital receivers can access Guide features and DVR functions.
  • Cisco/Scientific Atlanta Digital Receivers CANNOT access DVR functions.

Installing the Charter TV App

  1. Go to the iTunes App Store or Google Play on your device, search for Charter TV and install the Charter TV App. The app icon will look like this:

  1. Locate the Charter TV App on your device and tap to open.

Note: Charter has two Charter TV Apps. The Charter TV App for residential Charter customers, and the Charter U App for students at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.  The Charter U App works only on the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus.

Inside Your Home - Bypassing Login

When you use the Charter TV App inside your home via your Charter Wifi network, you automatically bypass login and users are automatically signed in as a guest.

This message appears when you bypass login. Tapping the message redirects you to the login page, if you want to access personalized features such as Watchlist or Favorites. 


When you're logged in as a guest, personalized sections of the Charter TV App, such as Watchlist, Favorites, and Customized Panels are unavailable.  If you select these sections, you'll have the option to log in for full access.

Log In

  1. Open the Charter TV icon on your device.
  2. Enter your Charter.net email address and password or My Account user name and password. Click here to learn how to find your Charter.net email address and password.
  3. Tap Log In.


  1. Tap Accept on the Charter Software License Agreement screen.


  1. Tap OK on the Adult Content Warning to proceed. By tapping OK, you acknowledge the app contains content that may not be appropriate for all age groups.

Create a Log In

If you don't currently have a Charter.net Email address and password or My Account user name and password you can create a Charter ID in the Charter TV App.

  1. From the log in screen, tap Create Account.
  2. Enter info in the required fields and tap Submit
  3. Choose a Charter ID and tap NEXT to confirm your new Charter ID was successfully set-up.

Note: Account Number and Last Name are required fields

Password Reset

  1. From the login screen, tap Reset Password.

  2. Enter your Charter.net email address and Account Number and then tap Next.

NOTE: When you reset your password while connected to a Charter network, we'll automatically display the Charter.net email associated with the account. If you're not on the Charter network, enter your security code, service ZIP code, or last name.

  1. Enter the New Password and Confirm Password, and then tap Next.

Having trouble accessing the Charter TV App?  Be sure that you have downloaded the latest version of the app from the app store. The Charter TV App version is updated periodically to include new features and bug fixes.

If you need help while on the login screen, you can get support info.

User Status

Select the Menu icon at the top left of the app to display your current access status at the bottom left of the menu.

  • In Home: Full Access - indicates that you are logged in and connected to your Charter WiFi network.
  • In Home: Login for Personalization - indicates that you are using the app as a guest, but have not logged in.
  • Out of Home: Limited Access - indicates that you are logged in but you are not connected to your Charter WiFi network.

Navigating the Charter TV App

Browse Panel Tiles

You have several options available to view the titles available on the home screen.

  • Swipe Left or Right to view additional titles.
  • Tap the Right Arrow circle button to the left of the selected category to browse the titles on one page.
  • Tap the Sort button on the right side of the page and select either A-Z or Z-A to arrange the titles.
  • Tap the Back button on the left side of the page to exit Browse All and return to the previous screen.

Customize Panels

You can customize the home screen panels to provide quick access to your favorite titles.

  1. On the home screen, scroll down and tap the Plus icon (+) in the lower left.
  2. To add a panel tap the Plus icon (+) for your desired panel under Add a Panel.
  3. To remove a panel, tap the X icon for your desired panel under Your Panels.
  4. Reorganize the panels on the home screen using the Reorder icon to change the positioning of each panel within the listing.
  5. When you're finished tap the Done button to exit the window.

My Favorites

You can add your favorite channels to My Favorites for quick access.

Note: Adding favorite in the Charter TV App doesn't impact your favorite channel list on your digital receiver

  1. Tap the Edit icon on the left side of the page in My Favorites to access the channels list.
  2. Scroll through the channel list and tap the Heart next to the channel you want to add. Tap the Heart a second time to remove it. Tap Done when you're finished.
  3. Your favorited channels are displayed in the My Favorites panel.

Search for Titles

You can search for a specific title, genre or other info such as an actor's name to find titles.

  1. On the upper right corner of the home screen, tap the Search icon (magnifying glass).
  2. Using the keypad, enter the title, genre or actor's name and a list displays with the available titles.
  3. Tap Browse All to view additional titles in the list. Swipe down to view additional titles.

More Info

Once you select a title you can view more info by swiping down on your device screen.

  • Episodes - Displays details about previous episodes of a series (if available).
  • More Like This - Displays titles similar to your selected title.
  • Cast & Crew - Displays a list of cast and crew members. Tap on a cast or crew member's name to view additional info.
  • Photos - Displays still photos from the selected program.

Tapping the Guide icon at the bottom of the home page displays your TV listings. You can use the Guide page to filter favorite channels, and search for, watch and record specific programming.

Filter Categories to display channels according to programming categories. To filter:

  1. Tap Filter at the top left corner of the page.
  2. Tap the category list to view the related programming.
  3. To remove the filters, tap Clear Filters at the bottom of the filter drop down menu or the right of the page.

Sort Channels to locate channels with ease. To sort:

  1. Tap Sort on the far right side of the page to sort by channel number.
  2. Tap Sort a second time to sort alphabetically.

Network Listings displays the listings for a specific network. To view a network’s listings:

  1. Tap the Network Name in the left column.
  2. Tap on a program to view the available viewing options.

Future Listings provides channel listings scheduled for up to 14 days. To view future listings:

  1. Tap the drop down arrow next to today's date at the top left of the page.
  2. Scroll down the list to locate and select the desired date.

Viewing and Recording options are built into the guide. To view or record a program:

  1. Tap the title in the Guide to see the available options
  2. Tap an available option
    • Watch - Begin watching the selected program (if available).
    • Choose Cable Box - Choose which Digital Receiver you want to control.
    • Send to TV - Change your TV to that program.
    • Record - Schedule DVR recording (Motorola digital receivers only).

Live TV

Tap Live TV to see all titles that are currently available to watch. Tap a title from the available list to begin watching.

Note: If the program is not listed under Live TV, it is currently unavailable to watch with your device.

On Demand

You can watch On Demand titles from Showtime, Starz, Encore or MoviePlex everywhere (if your subscription includes these networks).  You can also browse On Demand programming and play it on your TV.

After choosing an On Demand title, tap the title to see play and download options (available options vary, depending on the title):

Tap the desired title to access the options.

  • Watch: Watch it now on your device.
  • Send to TV: Watch it now on your TV.
  • Download to Go: Download an On Demand title for later viewing (download requires connection to any WiFi network, watching downloaded title does not require a network connection). Go to Download to Go support.
  • Watchlist: Add it to your Watchlist for later viewing on your TV.

Instant Upgrade

If you select a channel that's not included in your subscription package, you can upgrade your subscription with the app via one of two options:

  • By selecting "Upgrade on TV".
    • The app will tune your TV to the Instant Upgrade channel where you can complete the upgrade with your remote control.  
  • By contacting a Charter Customer Service Representative.

With your Watchlist, you can build a list of programs to watch later.

  • To add a program to your Watchlist, choose your title and tap the pushpin icon.
  • To remove a program from your Watchlist, tap the red X icon alongside the title.

Kid Zone

With Kid Zone, you can easily find kid-friendly programming, and tap the padlock icon to keep your kids from accessing other areas of the app. Tap Kid Zone at the bottom of the home screen.

To lock Kid Zone:

  1. Tap the Lock icon at the upper left corner of the page.
  2. Tap Lock on the Enable Kid Zone Lock message.

Live TV

To unlock Kid Zone:

  1. Tap the lock icon at the upper left corner of the page.
  2. Enter your Login password.
  3. Tap unlock.

Sport Zone

With Sport Zone, quickly find all the live games currently playing, and get real-time scores. You can also use the Spoiler button to hide scores of games you're recording for later viewing. Tap Sport Zone at the bottom of the home screen.

Games on TV

The Games on TV section displays:

  • Current games in progress with live scores and estimated time remaining.
  • Completed games for today with final scores
  • Future games listed by day
  • A Thuuz excitement rating

You can also set scores to be visible or hidden by tapping Spoiler.

  • A green check mark indicates that and all scores are visible.
  • A red X indicated that scores are hidden

Tap any game to watch the program when available. A Play icon appears if available to watch and a green key appears if the game is not included in your subscription package.

My Account/Settings

Tap the My Account icon at the bottom of the home screen to access the My Account/Settings page where you'll find:

  • Summary: View your account user name and account number.
  • Manage Devices: Manage your digital receivers by assigning nicknames for easy identification.
  • About: View the Charter Privacy Policy or License.


If you have multiple digital receivers, giving them nicknames will help you know which one you're scheduling recordings on. To know which TV you're naming, stand in front of the TV and tap "Check This TV" until a message displays on the TV. To manage your devices:

  1. Tap Manage Devices.
  2. Tap Check This TV for each TV on the account until a message with the digital receiver MAC address displays on the TV screen.
  3. Replace the STB name with a nickname.
  4. Tap Save.

NOTE: Set the TV you use most often as the default TV.

You have two ways to ways to play programming:

  • On Device: Tap Play to start watching on your tablet or smartphone (when available).
  • On TV: Choose the cable box you want to watch on, and then tap Send to TV (live or On Demand programming with compatible digital receiver).


 Buttons and icons available while view your program:

  • Done: Stop viewing the title.
  • Play/Pause: Pause or play a title.
  • Volume Control: Slide left or right to turn volume down or up.
  • Closed Captioning: Turn Closed Captioning on or off.
  • Arrows: Expand to full screen view.
  • TV icon: View the title on your TV.
  • More Info: View info about the title currently playing.

  • Record: Record a single episode.
  • Record Series: Record all upcoming episodes of a series.

Download to Go

Register a Device

To download On Demand programming to your mobile device, first register the device within the Charter TV App. You can register up to five devices on your account.

To Register a Device:

  1. Log in and tap the Menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Devices at the top center of the screen. Your device will appear in the list and display your available memory. Tap the Register button.

After the registration process is complete, a success message appears, and the Register button changes to a Remove button.

NOTE: When you register your device, the app will use the name from the device itself. After the name is registered with the Charter TV App, the name can't be changed.

  • For iOS devices, you can find the device name in Settings > General > About > Name.
  • For Android devices, the name is the manufacturer and model.

Remove a Device

You can register up to five devices on your account. If you want to download On Demand programming to an unregistered mobile device and you've already registered the maximum number of devices on your account, you can remove a device to make room for the new one.

If a registered device is lost, stolen or broken, you can use any other registered device to remove the missing device.

To Remove a Device:

  1. Log in and tap the Menu icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Devices at the top center of the screen. Your device will appear in the list. Tap the Remove button.

After the removal process is complete, a success message appears, and the device no longer appears in your Registered Devices list.

Registered Devices


You can download On Demand programming based on whether the program can be watched on your device or only on your TV. The Watch on Device or Watch on TV options displays the titles available for each category. 

By selecting Watch on Device, you can see On Demand titles that are available to watch on your device and/or are available for download. 

  • If you have a subscription to Showtime, Starz, Encore or MoviePlex, you can download thousands of movies and TV shows and watch them on the go, everywhere—even without a network connection. Simply tap the Download button.

Watch on Device

  • You must be connected to a WiFi network to download. If you try to download a title while not connected to a WiFi network, the download will begin after you connect to WiFi. You'll receive notifications from the app when the download is complete or if the download is interrupted.

Added To Queue

  • If your device is not registered, tap Register to register the device immediately and continue with your download.


  • If the download is available in multiple video qualities, you can select which quality you prefer depending on the storage space available on your device.

Estimated Download Time

Download times depend on connection speed, the device type and the quality/size of the download.  For example, to download a 60-minute program over a 10 Mbps connection, it would take approximately 40 minutes for higher quality video (approximately 1,200 MB), or about 30 minutes for medium quality video (approximately 250MB).

Play or Delete Downloaded Programming

You can find and manage your downloaded titles in My Library under Downloads.

  • You can download one copy of a title per device at a time.
  • Downloaded titles can't be transferred to another device.
  • Download, delete and re-download as many times as you want, as long as the title is still available On Demand.
  • Downloaded title will expire and be automatically deleted from your device if:
    • The mobile device has been offline for 15 to 30 days (depending on the programming partner).
    • The content is no longer available On Demand.
  • You'll be notified that a downloaded title will be deleted seven days ahead of the expiration date.

To watch a downloaded title with or without a WiFi or cellular connection:

  1. In My Library, select the title in the Downloads section.
  2. Select the edit icon on the Downloads page.
  3. Scroll to the Watch on Phone section and select Play.

When you watch a downloaded title, you can:

  • Pause and resume watching playback from where you left off, or restart playback from the beginning.
  • Rewind or fast forward using the slider bar at the top of the screen.

To manually delete a recorded title:

  1. In My Library, select Browse All underneath the title in the Downloads section.
  2. Select the edit icon on the Downloads page.
  3. Then select the delete icon (red circle with white X) at the top right of the title.
  4. Confirm or cancel your decision to delete the title.
