Outlook Express/3rd Party Mail Setup

Adding a New Account

  1. Launch Outlook Express
  1. Select the Tools menu, then select Accounts

  1. Click the Add button and select Mail

Outlook Express runs a wizard to guide you through each step of configuring Outlook Express.

  1. Type your full name as you want people to see it when they receive Email from you.

  1. Type your Charter Internet Email address. Click Next.

  1. Use these settings to configure your Charter email address:

    • Select IMAP from the drop-down box for your incoming mail server.
    • Type your incoming mail server name: imap.charter.net.
    • Type your outgoing mail server name: smtp.charter.net.
    • Click Next.

  1. Type your account name and password

Note: If you choose not to enter your password here -- and leave the Remember password option checked -- Outlook Express still allows you to check your Email, but requires you to enter your password each time you check for new mail or send messages. This could be your choice to maintain personal privacy if several people will share one computer. When changing your Email password on Charter.net you must also change it in Outlook Express

  1. Click Next.

  1. Click Finish to complete your internet connection set-up.

Email Settings

These settings should be applied to your Desktop Computers. Your mobile devices (including laptops) should use these settings.

  • Server Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Mail server: IMAP.charter.net
  • Port: 143
  • Outgoing Mail Server: SMTP.charter.net
  • Port: 25

Switching from POP to IMAP

To prevent losing your Email or Email folders when switching from POP settings to IMAP:

If you had "Leave messages on server" enabled since initial Charter.net Email setup, follow these steps:

  1. Create an imap enabled account for the Email address you want to switch to within same Email client. (Most modern Email clients can have both a POP enabled and IMAP enabled mailbox/account that share the same account credentials)
  2. Delete your pop mailbox account from the Email client

If you did NOT have "Leave messages on server" enabled since initial Charter.net Email setup or unsure, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that you have the option "Leave messages on server" checked in your account settings on your Email client.  This setting should be available under "advanced settings" or something similar, depending on the client.
  2. If you have the option to disable Send/Receive in your Email client, disable it to ensure no new messages are delivered to the POP enabled mailbox/account.
  3. Create an imap enabled account for the Email address you want to switch to within same Email client.  (Most modern Email clients can have both a POP enabled and IMAP enabled mailbox/account that share the same account credentials)
  4. Move messages and/or folders by creating a storage or data folder (Outlook calls these PST), then drag and drop the messages/folders you wish to keep into the new folder.
  5. When you have moved over all of your Emails/Folders you can delete your pop mailbox
