Definitions
Mobile Device
A mobile device is a device that typically has a display screen with touch input and/or a miniature keyboard. Some examples include: Smartphones/PDA's (Android phone, IPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile phone), IPod, tablet computers (IPad, Galaxy Tab, etc.), eReader (Kindle Fire, Nook, etc.)
These devices typically have an option to discover the setting based on your Email address. The correct settings will be populated for the following mobile devices: Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Apple devices (IPhone, IPad, IPod, etc.).
There are other devices that can connect and download messages; the above are the most common.
Desktop Email Client
An application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and enables you to send, receive and organize Email. Some examples are: Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc.
Webmail
This refers to going to www.charter.net and clicking on the Email Link. You will be viewing the Email messages in a browser window.
IMAP
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and the settings allow you to receive Email messages through our network. IMAP allows for mobile devices to sync changes on Email servers meaning changes made on the device are also made on the Email servers.
SMTP
SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and allows your Email messages to be sent through our network.
SSL
Stands for Secure Socket Layer and is an additional security layer
Sync
If you want to enable multiple devices to receive your Email you will need to consider if you want them to be "synced". Syncing up your devices allows you to have the same results regardless of the device you are using for your Emails. In order for this to happen you will need to use IMAP in order for all changes made on the device to be made on the Email servers
