TiVo Premiere from Charter Functionality and Remote Control Help

Effective September 6, Charter will no longer sell TiVo Premiere from Charter service to customers. We are currently evaluating the integration of TiVo software and other software into our next-generation video delivery platform. Customers that own Retail TiVo equipment are not impacted with this change.  Click here for information about Charter TV packages.

  • On the back of your TiVo DVR.

Functionality

Setting the Picture Format

HDTVs programs can be broadcast in the following formats: 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i.

Some video on demands and webcasts may also be broadcast in any of these formats. (Please check with individual providers for availability.) 1080p, 1080i and 720p are high-definition formats, 480p is known as enhanced definition, and 480i is standard definition. The number indicates the resolution; generally, bigger numbers mean sharper, more detailed images. The letter indicates the method of scanning: interlaced (1080i & 480i), or progressive (1080p, 720p & 480p).

The TiVo Premiere and TiVo Preview boxes support 1080i, 720p, 480i, and 420p formats. Premiere and Preview also support 1080p. In addition, all these models can convert incompatible video formats so that they can display on your TV. All boxes only record in the original quality a video or broadcast is transmitted. The boxes are unable to convert from one format to another format.

You can set the video output format either from TiVo Central or by pressing the Format button on the front of the DVR. For Premiere you can also choose the video output formats that are compatible with your TV during Guided Setup.

To set the video output format from TiVo Central:

  1. Press the TiVo button to go to TiVo Central and select Messages & Settings > Settings > Video > Video Output Formats.
  2. Select an output format that is compatible with your TV.
    • For Premiere check the boxes that are compatible with your TV, or choose Test Formats and follow the on-screen instructions to choose compatible formats. (IMPORTANT: You MUST select 720p or higher to view TiVo with HD menus. You must also choose the widescreen aspect ratio. If you do not have an HDTV that support widescreen format, you must use TiVo with SD menus.)
  3. Press Thumbs Up 3 times to confirm your selection.

To set the video output format from the front of the DVR:

  1. Press the Live TV button and tune to a high definition channel.
  2. Press the Format button on the front of the DVR to display the video output format. While the display is still visible, press the button again to change the format. Observe whether the new setting improves the high definition video quality.
    • NOTE: If you select a format that is incompatible (the screen goes blank, for example), press the Format button again to go to the next setting.
  3. Tune to a standard definition channel and observe whether the setting also improves the video quality at standard definition.
    • NOTE: If the current setting is Native, or one of the Hybrid formats, the video format may change when you change channels. There may be a delay, or the picture may flicker, as your TV adjusts to the new format.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until you find the best setting for your TV.

For example, you can filter for kids' shows, movies, or sports/baseball. When filtering is on, only channels with programs in the selected category within the next six hours will display. In addition, programs that do not fit the selected category appear gray until you highlight them.

NOTE: The day and time selected will display in the blue bar below the program description. The channel list and filter selected will display at the bottom of the guide.

Remote Control

Remote Control TV Code Search

Your installer should have programmed your TiVo remote to work with your TV. If you wish to change the set up and have already tried the standard TiVo setup described in How Do I Program My Remote to Control a TV /Stereo? and were unable to find remote control codes that worked, you can try the following procedures to search the complete list of codes that are stored in your TiVo remote control.

Search for a code to control TV Power and Volume

  1. Cover the end of the TiVo remote control with your hand.
  2. Hold down the TiVo and TV POWER buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) light on the remote control remains on.
  3. Remove your hand from the end of the TiVo remote control.
  4. Enter code 0999.
  5. After you enter the code, the red (or amber) light will flash three times and then remain on.
  6. Press CHANNEL UP once every two seconds. This will test hundreds of codes, one by one.
    • IMPORTANT: Do not go any faster than this or you may skip over a code that works.

If you press CHANNEL UP and your TV turns off, press ENTER to select the code. Press the TV POWER button to test the code. If your TV turns on, you have successfully programmed the remote.

  • If you cycle through all the codes, the red LED will go off, indicating that you have tried all the codes. If this happens, or if you selected a code but the TV does not respond to the test, try again, to make sure you did not skip over your code by going too fast.
  • If you cannot find a code that works, your current remote may not be preprogrammed with the code for your TV.

Search for a code to control the TV Input function

  1. Cover the end of the TiVo remote control with your hand.
  2. Hold down the TiVo and TV INPUT buttons simultaneously until the red (or amber) light on the remote control remains on.

  7. If you press CHANNEL UP and your TV switches inputs, press ENTER to select the code. Press the TV INPUT button to test the code. If your TV switches inputs again, you have successfully programmed the remote.

Search for a code to control the volume on your AV/Stereo receiver

  6. If you press CHANNEL UP and the volume on your AV/Stereo receiver becomes muted, press ENTER to select the code. Press VOLUME UP and then VOLUME DOWN to test the code. If the volume changes, you have successfully programmed the remote.

NOTE: If your DVR did not include a learning remote, you can purchase a TiVoGlo Premium learning remote at the TiVo Store.

TiVo Slide Remote

Note: TiVo Slide Remotes are no longer available for purchase

The TiVo Slide remote is a plug-and-play QWERTY keyboard remote that makes your TiVo box even easier to use. The keyboard works by sending Bluetooth signals to a USB receiver that is installed in the TiVo box.
The integrated keyboard is functional only in Bluetooth mode. If the USB receiver is removed, the remote operates in IR (infrared) mode, where all buttons are functional except the keyboard. To determine which mode the remote is operating in, simply press a button. The activity indicator light on the remote flashes blue in Bluetooth mode, or amber in IR mode.

System requirements

The TiVo Slide remote is compatible with the TiVo Premiere or Preview boxes running software version 1.8.5 or later.

Installing your remote

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the remote.
  2. Using the diagram in the compartment as a guide, insert the 2 supplied AA batteries, and then replace the cover.
  3. Plug the USB receiver into the USB port on the back of the TiVo box. It takes about a second for the box and receiver to recognize each other, and then your remote is ready to use. In rare instances, you may need to pair the remote to its USB receiver.
  4. If your TiVo box is in an enclosed cabinet, or the box does not seem to respond consistently to commands from your new remote, use the USB extension cable to reposition the USB receiver. To do this, insert the male end of the USB extension cable into a USB port on the TiVo box, insert the USB receiver into the female end of the extension cable, and then place the USB receiver near the front of the TiVo box.

Programming your remote

You can program your remote to control your TV's power, input, volume, and mute functions. To do this:

  1. Turn on your TV using the TV's remote.
  2. Press the TiVo button on your remote to go to TiVo Central and then select Messages & Settings > Settings > Remote, CableCARD, & Devices > Remote Control Setup.
  3. Use the on-screen instructions to program your remote for the functions that are relevant to your setup at home.

If you are unable to find a code that works using this procedure, you can perform a code search.

Tips & Tricks

  • To change the orientation of the navigation controls on the top keypad to match the ones on the bottom keypad when the TiVo Slide remote is open, hold down the TiVo and green "D" keys until the indicator light flashes blue twice. When the remote is closed, the controls on the top keypad will function in the standard way.
  • To see how much battery power is left on your remote, go to Messages & Settings > Account & System Information > System Information and check the Battery Status. The TiVo Slide remote reports the battery status only when it is operating in Bluetooth mode. If you switch to IR mode by removing the USB receiver, the Battery Status shows the reading from the last time the TiVo Slide remote was operating in Bluetooth mode. (Other TiVo remotes, such as the ones that come with TiVo boxes, are always in IR mode and do not report their battery status.)
  • In TiVo Search, press ENTER to jump from the on-screen keypad to the search results.
  • To turn off the backlight, press and hold the TiVo + THUMBS DOWN buttons for 3 seconds (extends battery life). To turn the backlight on again, press and hold TiVo + THUMBS UP buttons for 3 seconds (for operation in a darkened room).
  • If your box uses a wireless adapter to connect to the TiVo service, leave at least 12" of space between the adapter body and the USB receiver.
  • When the TiVo Slide remote is in pairing mode, other Bluetooth devices may "discover" it. However, the TiVo Slide remote is only supported for use with the TiVo boxes listed above. For more information, go to Pairing the TiVo Slide remote.
  • IMPORTANT: You can assign a remote address to the TiVo Slide remote, but as soon as the USB receiver is removed from the USB port, the TiVo Slide's address reverts to 0. This means every TiVo box within range will respond to its commands. For best results, always leave the USB receiver plugged into the USB port on the TiVo box.
